Winter Illuminations is a concert journey through light in its many forms: sacred radiance, winter stillness, memory, hope, peace, and joyful celebration. Blending beloved holiday favorites with luminous contemporary choral works, timeless sacred music, spirituals, and audience carols, the program invites listeners into an afternoon of wonder, reflection, and shared humanity.
The concert opens with music of proclamation and awe, from the jubilant brilliance of Vivaldi’s Gloria and Kevin Memley’s festive Hodie to the serene beauty of Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium. Contemporary masterworks by Eric Whitacre and Ola Gjeilo create shimmering musical landscapes inspired by light, stars, and the mystery of winter skies, while traditional carols and songs of peace remind us of the warmth and compassion at the heart of the season.
Following intermission, the program turns toward nostalgia, celebration, and fireside warmth with beloved holiday classics including Sleigh Ride, Somewhere in My Memory from Home Alone, White Christmas, and The Christmas Song. The afternoon also features the world premiere of Pax Noctis Descendit (Reflections on “Silent Night”) by Music Director Don Scott Carpenter — a contemplative meditation on silence, light, and the enduring hope of Christmas night.
The concert concludes in joyful communal celebration with festive carols and audience singing, offering a reminder that music has the power not only to illuminate the season, but to bring people together in shared joy, reflection, and peace.
Featuring the historic Healdsburg Chorus, the debut season of the newly formed Healdsburg Singers chamber ensemble, and the inaugural season of Music Director Don Scott Carpenter, Winter Illuminations celebrates the beauty of communal singing and the many ways music can inspire wonder, comfort, and connection during the winter season.
